What are TMPH and TKPH?
• TMPH stands for – Ton Miles Per Hour
• TKPH stands for – Ton Kilometers Per Hour
TMPH/TKPH is a formula based on a vehicle’s speed, the amount of time it takes to complete a cycle (load to dump and return), and the amount of weight a tire carries. It is one more good reason for a weight study!
How important are they to tire life?
Arguably, a tire’s TMPH/TKPH rating and a job site TMPH/TKPH rating are the most important factors to consider when choosing the right tire for the job. Each of the major tire manufacturers assigns a TMPH/TKPH value to their tires. The value they assign to the tire depends on its size, construction, tread type, and rubber compound.
The key to getting the most out of your tires is selecting the tire whose TMPH/TKPH value matches closest to the TMPH/TKPH rating of the tire without exceeding the tire’s rating. The only way to accomplish this is to first conduct a weight study, and second, conduct a TMPH/TKPH study at your particular job site.
Most tire manufacturer representatives have the experience to do this for you, but D&D Tire’s ETMS staff not only has this knowledge, but, we insist on doing it for every customer. Many times after conducting a TMPH/TKPH study, ETMS determines that we can upgrade your tires to more abrasive resistant compound that will provide you with greater tire life and consequently, lower operating costs. Conversely, we may find that we need to step down to a cooler running compound which, does not always mean less tire life since if necessary, this will reduce the amount of heat related tire failures.
